Wymondham Abbey is famous for more than 150 ancient angels, most of them carved in wood 500 years ago, which are perched in the soaring hammer beam roof.
Now they are to be joined by glittering 21st century companions, right, crafted by designer Jennifer Walters. There are 10 new angels, with “diamond”, “golden”, “sapphire” and “silver” wings to commemorate each class of business sponsor supporting the Abbey's Flower Festival from July 18 to 20.
Festival co-ordinator Anita Wilson is delighted with the support she has received. “The idea seems to have really captured people's imagination. The abbey desperately needs better facilities if it is to continue to serve the community. We are truly grateful for all the practical and financial support we are receiving.”
It is not too late for businesses to sign up as Abbey Angels; individuals can also sponsor flower arrangements and dedicate them in memory of a loved one.
