A talk to Wymondham Nature Group will highlight Lake Kerkini a beautiful Greek wetland habitat that is home to a wide range of amphibians, reptiles and insects including many species of butterfly.
Ann and Bob Carpenter will be giving an illustrated talk on October 11 on the birds, butterflies and other wildlife they saw on a visit to the area in the north east of Greece.
Framed by mountains, Lake Kerkini began as an artificial reservoir created in 1932, on the site of extensive marshlands, for irrigating local crops like sunflower and maize. With further work in the 1980s, it has developed into a thriving, internationally important area for wildlife.
It is one of the most important locations for birds in Greece - over 300 species - including migratory birds.
