Traders at the next farmers' market in Wymondham on March 15 will be raising a glass and sharing a cake to celebrate the eighth anniversary of this popular community facility.

The birthday cake will be donated by the Country Market stall and liquid refreshment will be in the form of apple juice from Ashill and beer from Spectum Brewery at Tharston.

Wymondham was the first town in Norfolk to have a farmers' market and it has gradually grown to an average of 25 stalls. These cover a wide range of locally sourced products, including fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs, cheeses, fish, sauces, beer, cakes and pastries, confectionery and plants.

The market was launched in March 2000, as a joint project between Wymondham Town Council and Wymondham Development Partnership, with the aim of utilising the market place and attracting more visitors to the town.

In 2003 it was voted Best Farmers' Market in Norfolk and over the years it has maintained its reputation of being a customer-friendly place to purchase locally produced food and produce.

Market co-ordinator David Fletcher said: “The stallholders have always worked as a team and this has contributed greatly to the success of the market.”
