Wymondham Wasps welcomed the Coventry side Old Leamingtonians to Tuttles Lane in Women's Championship Midlands Two at the weekend.

New to this level of rugby and having narrowly missed out on the victory at Buckingham Swans the previous week, Wasps were keen to chalk up their first win of the season and did just that in front of a good sized crowd.

Wasps started strongly but soon had to reshuffle due to an early blood injury to centre Maria Carpenter. The home scrum looked strong from the start and they used this dominance to push OLs' back deep into their own half.

With 13 minutes on the clock, pressure in the scrum forced a miss kicked clearance which Wasps captain Katie Allcock took calmly and ran in for the try.

OLs responsed quickly, breaking from the halfway line. It looked as if Wymondham's full back Amanda Jones had done enough to prevent the score but unfortunately for Wasps, the tackled player managed to offload from the ground to close support for the try.

OLs started to play some nice flowing rugby and looked sure to score again, only to be denied a second try when the referee brought the game back for a OL forward pass, letting Wasps off the hook by the smallest of margins.

Taking a few minutes to regroup Wasps were once again able to take hold of the game. Nicola Kaciubskyj scored under the posts and then went on to convert her own try to make it 12-5. Wymondham capitalised on this newfound momentum with a slick move off the back of another superb scrum, with the try scored by Jessica Brown.

The second half started with an early Wasps yellow card for a deliberate knock on. OLs made the most of their overlap to score in the corner which they then converted but this was to be the last score of the afternoon for the visitors.

Libby Lockwood scored again for Wasps, converted by Kaciubskyj. Despite suffering another yellow card, Wasps pulled away and made sure of the win and bonus points when Holly Crook broke through the OL defensive line to score her first try of the season, again converted by Kaciubskyj.
