Wymondham's U10 side reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Prima Tiger Cup for the first time in their history after beating Hinckley 2-0 in front of a large crowd at Welford Road.

The Norfolk side scored two tries in the first-half to beat four-time winners Hinckley and book a return trip to the home of Leicester Tigers later this season.

Dominic Findlay, head coach of Wymondham U10s, said: “It's a great achievement for us. We are such a small junior club and just being at Welford Road was great for the club. We came up the night before the game to turn it into a bigger experience and it worked, their nerves had gone. We are the first Wymondham U10s to make it to the semi-final, it's amazing.”

Findlay, who is also headteacher at Langley School, Loddon, added: “A lot of the boys are local to around the club and this is a dream for them. (England international) Toby Flood came up and wished them all the best, what more can you ask for?”

The day's other quarter-final, which was played before Tigers' 20-3 win over Newcastle Falcons in the Guinness Premiership, saw three-time winners Lutterworth book their passage at the expense of holders Nottingham Boots Corsairs. The game finished 1-1 but Lutterworth went through having scored the game's first try.

Wymondham and Lutterworth will be joined in the semi-finals by Burton and Stratford, who won through to the last four at an earlier date. The semi-finals will be played at Welford Road before Leicester Tigers' Guinness Premiership game against Worcester Warriors on Saturday, February 21.

Scott Clarke, Tigers community manager, said: “Congratulations to all of the players for their part in two fantastic games of rugby. They were played in great spirit, and the youngsters displayed a lot of skill in what were difficult conditions. We look forward to seeing Wymondham and Lutterworth back at Welford Road in February.”

The Prima Tiger Cup, which is supported by Loughborough-based Prima Solutions, is now in its 15th season and is open to U10 teams from across the country.

More than 50 sides entered this year's competition, which began with local festivals at Stoke RFC in Staffordshire, Kenilworth RFC in Warwickshire, Swaffham RFC in Norfolk, Nottingham Boots Corsairs RFC and at Market Harborough RFC in Leicestershire.
