Saturday saw the beginning of the build-up to the new season at Wymondam with the visit of St Neots for a friendly which the Cambridgeshire side won 13-12.

The visitors kicked the match off on a hot afternoon and it soon settled into a good contest

Wymondham drew first blood when Robbie Morris fed Charlie Duffin to release his backs and the ball went quickly out along the line to Lawrie Mulane, who beat the defence cover well to score an unconverted try wide out.

St Neots then scored two unconverted tries to take a 10-5 lead into the interval, with the break much appreciated by both sets of players.

Wymondham had to start the half with 14 men as they still had minutes left on a yellow card. But the front five of Ed Coleman, Conor Airdrie, Dave Sillett, James Boggan and young Toby Setters immediately took the game to the visitors in the tight, which again left the back row, now consisting off Hamish Wright, Tom Stace and Tom Macdonald, to get to breakdowns quickly. And from one such passage of play Boggan crashed over for a try converted by Shaun Rix, who had slotted in at full back, to regain the lead at 12-10.

With a minute remaining the visitors were awarded a penalty which they converted to re-take the lead at 12-13.

The final whistle came as a much needed respite from the heat with Wymondham able to take many positives from the game.
