Despite a spirited fightback in the final quarter, a lacklustre performance for the majority of the match resulted in Wymondham's exit from the national EDF Energy Junior Rugby Vase competition.

It was clear from the early exchanges that the home side's Development XV was more than capable of dominating visitors Sandown and Shanklin and they were first on the scoresheet with a Pat Reed penalty.

With the scores tied at 3-3 at the break Wymondham attempted to strengthen the side with the introduction of all four members of the bench.

The two teams exchanged penalties and then the visitors took the lead for the first time through the boot of their goal kicker.

Ironically, it was following an effective passage of attacking play from the home team that Sandown and Shanklin dealt the killer blow with a breakaway try.

Wymondham were thrown a lifeline when number eight Tony Wishart powered over.

Reed's conversion drew them within a single point of the visitors, but the visitors held on for a 15-14 win.
