Wymondham U11 rugby team beat Diss in the final of the Land Rover Premiership Cup.

It was played before Northampton Saints' match against Newcastle Falcons on Saturday.

The Norfolk outfits were two of 19 clubs that descended on Franklin's Gardens, home of the Saints. Winning this competition has given them the privilege of a lap of honour at Twickenham during the Guinness Premiership Final on May 29.

Wymondham, who conceded just the one try in the entire tournament, were deserved winners over Diss in the final, and the teams received their prizes in a packed stadium from Saints stars Barry Everitt and Scott Gray.

Dominic Findlay, the Wymondham coach, said: “We've had a brilliant day and thoroughly enjoyed it. The team showed great spirit and moved the ball brilliantly, I couldn't be happier. We've had a fantastic day here and the lads have been great.”

Wymondham completed the pool stages with four wins, 14 tries for and none against. The semi-final saw them take the game to the opposition, dominating the game to the point where the opposition backs hardly saw the ball, winning again by two tries to zero.

The final was then beckoning and eerily they came up against local opposition Diss. They started the match well taking the lead from the start and although pushed, ended the game winners by three tries to one.

The team put their hearts into the tournament and through sheer grit, determination, skill, and intelligent game play, put in displays which prompted the pool referee to say it was one of the best U11 sides he has seen.

The youngsters from Wymondham and Diss will represent the Saints in a parade of honour at half-time during the 2010 Guinness Premiership Grand Final at Twickenham on Saturday, May 29.
