This local rugby derby between Wymondham and Crusaders promised much as a contest but failed to live up to expectations.

Wymondham were at their irrepressible best and swept aside a plucky Crusaders with a nine-try romp that could have been more.

A dummy from Ross Crook opened up the Crusaders defence and Neil Harris got the first points on the board, with Crook adding the extra two.

Straight from the re-start a miss pass to Will Mitchell, in off his wing, split the opposition defence and with only one to beat he

off-loaded to Alex Brugger, who scored under the posts, Crook's conversion making it 14-0 with only five minutes gone.

Crusaders re-grouped and held Wymondham at bay for 10 minutes before Ricky Holt nipped through. Then Crook added a penalty to stretch the lead. Going into added time at the end of the half veteran skipper John Morfoot ended an excellent forwards' drive, bringing Wymondham up to 27 points.

Two minutes after the re-start Mitchell was on the scoresheet following some fine inter-passing between Tom Coller and Rodney Arbon. Mike Kerridge, on for Jon Coltman, then scored and Crook's conversion made it 41.

Crusaders put a series of

phases together that tested Wymondham's defence, but once again they held firm.

An attempt to counter-attack by Crusaders was brought to an abrupt halt with a home try by Arbon as he intercepted a loose pass. The home side then went over the half-century, following a speculative downfield kick by

Holt, that was chased down by Brugger who made up a 30 metre gap on his opposite number to score in the corner.

Pat Reed celebrated his 21st birthday with Wymondham's final try. Making a deft chip over the defence, he picked it up himself to score under the posts. Crook's conversion was the final kick of the game and brought Wymondham's tally to 60 points and moved them up to fifth in the table.

The man-of-the-match award went to Aaron Swanborough.
