The re-arranged Wymondham AC New Year's Day 10km road race produced a thrilling finish at the weekend with some excellent times in good running conditions.

Veteran Wayne Lincoln, of City of Norwich AC won a sprint to the line.

He had stormed round the course in a time of 32 minutes 24 seconds, to see off nearest rival Nick Earl of UEA by just nine seconds - with third placed Rick Ward (City of Norwich) five seconds further back.

Completing a closely-bunched

top four was the experienced Neil Davison, another CoNAC runner, in 32.42.

Clare Donavan, of North Norfolk Beach Runners, took the women's prize with a time of 38.31 which was good enough for 19th position overall. Anya Elvin was next, finishing 27th in a time of 39.36.

The race was rescheduled for Saturday after snow and ice had made the course unsafe for racing on New Year's Day. Not all of the original 450 entrants were able to run on the rescheduled date, but with additional entries on the day a strong field assembled.

With many WAC members helping on the day, only five took part as runners.

Oliver Milk had an excellent run, finishing seventh overall in 36:34.

Next home was Richard White whose time of 38:06 placed him second in the M45 age group.

He missed the winner's trophy for that category by a tantalizing 14 seconds. However, later on the same day he was rewarded with first place in the Runners' Centre Grand Prix, consolidating his position as one of the best M45 runners in the county.

Phil Waity, one of WAC's youngest stars, produced a solid performance finishing in 38:32.

New member Mal Garwood reached the finish line in 46:46 while Lucy Perry, the only WAC female entrant, followed in 58:59.

Race director Karl Chapman was pleased with the event: “It was a challenge to reschedule this event at short notice and I am very grateful for the support.

“I thank all members and volunteers for their help and commitment. Without them this event could not take place.”
