Wymondham's Rugby Club first team's defensive mettle will be put to the test when they travel to Upminster in London League Three North-East on Saturday.

Last weekend Wymondham, whilst dominating the vast majority of the fixture against Dagenham, just scraped home with a 10-0 win.

However, what was most pleasing for the coaching staff was the consistent defensive performance recording a clean sheet in consecutive weeks.

Upminster have, in recent seasons, a formidable record on home soil.

They have a pitch that has a considerable slope and they have exploited this feature with some alacrity as Wymondham found to their cost last season losing 15-8 and at the same time their 27-match unbeaten record.

Since then Wymondham's away form has been less than satisfactory so a win on Saturday would go along way to dismissing those away day demons.

Both the second and third XV's are at home although the latter are pencilled in to play their fixture against Thetford II at Easton College whilst the second string host Wisbech at Tuttles Lane.

Last weekend all three teams recorded victories amassing a total of 102 points for and just 12 against.

Wymondham 10, Dagenham 0

Wymondham won this must-win home fixture but although they delivered the points, it was a performance littered with errors.

Despite dominating large parts of the game Wymondham kept Dagenham in the hunt right to the very end. However, much credit must go to the Ds who, with something of a scratch side, kept a rampant Wymondham at bay restricting them to one try when it could easily have been five.

The second half was just a minute old when Wymondham finally breached D's defence, Barry O'Sullivan evaded several tackles to score, Tom Wilson converting.

Wilson struck a neat penalty kick home. MoM: David Blake.

The previous weekend Wymondham beat visitors Billericay 20-0. Jonathan Loades scored a try, Tom Wilson slotted a penalty, then a sublime attacking move released Chris Brown who dashed 50m to make the line, converted by Wilson.

Loades then sealed the game when Stephen Simms kicked a beautifully weighted cross-field kick that saw Ian Harris, Alex Brugger and Loades waiting to pounce.

MoM: Colin Sykes.
