THREE new players to the sport of judo travelled to Chatham in Kent on Sunday to take part in an event held purely for white belt beginners.

Representing Wymondham Judo Club, neither five-year-old Jack Travis nor Rebecca Anderson-Brown, 15, had ever competed before - and Harvey Lake, six, had taken part in just one grading before.

Jack and Harvey, who both train at the North Wymondham Community Centre class for four to six- year-olds, had some good fights and wins, and both won bronze medals.

Rebecca, who trains with the older juniors at Ketts Park, won all her fights convincingly to take an excellent gold in her category.

Coach Chris Claydon, who also attended, said: “This is the first time our club has been to this event, and all three were very brave to give it a go.

“I was very impressed with them all and am confident that they have the potential to go far in the sport.”

A victim of its own success, Wymondham Judo Club is still completely full and regrets that it is unable to take any new players - even on a waiting list.
