Newly-opened Attleborough Community Boxing Gym is expected to go from strength to strength following an overwhelming turnout for their first night of training.

Norwich's British lightweight champion Jon Thaxton officially opened the gym last week and since then organisers have been inundated with people wanting to sign up as members.

“It's going to snowball and snowball and snowball,” said coach Jon Dennis, who has helped set up the club which is run under the auspices of Dereham and District ABC.

“Monday was the first night of training and it all went very well. All kinds of lads turned up, all shapes and sizes, but the one thing they had in common was that they had the right ethos and a willingness to learn and help each other out.

“Everybody realised that they've got a lot to learn and that this is a new club just finding its feet.”

Dennis added: “I'd just like to thank Jono for taking the time out to come and open the gym.

“He's a great ambassador for the sport and we wish him all the best for his forthcoming European title fight.”

Training will take place at the gym, which is based on the Leys Lane industrial site and next to Loggers Gym, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6.45-8pm. Tuesday evenings will also see junior beginners train from 5.45-6.45pm.

Yearly membership costs £5 and in addition to that it's £1 per session for juniors under the age of 16 and £2 per session for seniors.
