WYMONDHAM recorded a memorable 24-20 win over their more senior opponents Norwich on Saturday.

And whilst Norwich had at least six regular first team players missing Wymondham will still hope that their losing away voodoo has well and truly been broken and they can now start to record some victories away from home in the league.

Wymondham began the game dominating their City opponents in both forward and back play and were also more aggressive defensively.

Their aggressive defence was instrumental in providing the platform for the first score after eight minutes when they halted a Norwich attack, turning over the ball and then creating the opportunity for Ian Harris to have a glimpse of the try line.

Norwich managed to halt the flying centre five metres short but were unable to stop Wymondham's second phase and ex-Norwich prop, Aaron Swanborough, crashed over for the first score that Ross Crook converted.

From the restart Norwich went onto the offensive putting Wymondham under some sustained pressure with Joe Riches asking several question of the visitors defence.

The Norwich onslaught forced Wymondham to concede several penalties that, in a league game, would undoubtedly resulted in at least one yellow card.

However, Norwich's scant reward for this was merely three points from the boot of Jay O'Brien and the home side would consider themselves a little short changed as a result.

Having been let off the hook Wymondham then began to take the game to their more senior counterparts.

A penalty for an early tackle by Ewan Wilson on Harris presented the visitors with the ideal platform to launch an attack with Dave Sillett, making his dream debut at the tender age of 46, heavily involved and providing 20-year-old Tom Coller with the golden opportunity to score. Once again Crook notched the conversion to give Wymondham a handsome lead.

A lead they extended six minutes later when some loose Norwich play was punished when Harris intercepted and sprinted to the line. Then from the restart Wymondham put together some excellent close passing that eventually released Sam Clover to score in the corner.

It seemed that Wymondham now were totally dominant and Tom Penny was denied a further score following some over-zealous play by the Wymondham forwards and schoolboy Tom Wilson just failed to make two long range penalty attempts before the half came to an end.

Wymondham began the second half as they'd ended the first, North Walsham prop Stewart Forton, guesting for Wymondham, made a telling break and Harris was felled just short of the Norwich line. This seemed to awaken the Norwich squad who began to regain their composure and put Wymondham under increasingly more pressure.

Sam Turner, Norwich's skipper for the day, was leading by example cutting into the Wymondham defence and eventually scoring Norwich's first try, converted by O'Brien.

Norwich were now the much livelier team keeping the visitors on the back foot and forcing Wymondham into desperate defence that resulted in a yellow card for captain John Morfoot.

Now with numerical superiority the home side managed to cut into in the Wymondham defence with Norwich's outstanding back Wilson gaining his just rewards with an exceptional score to give the home support hope of a turn around.

Five minutes later Clark Hindley grabbed Norwich's third try and O'Brien's conversion set up a grandstand finish with Norwich now only four points behind.

Minutes later Wymondham's Crook received a yellow card for an outrageously late tackle and it looked like Norwich might grab the winner.

This was now time for some committed defence and try as they may Norwich could not get the winner in an exciting and tense final 10 minutes.

The final desperate tackle by 17-year-old Dave Clover and Shane Hickey on Norwich's flying winger Tim Perryman epitomised the desire to win and should give the Tuttles Lane outfit confidence in the run in to the end of the season.
