Youngsters from Wymondham RFC participated in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup hosted by Northampton Saints.

Since being launched during the 2008-09 season, the nationwide grassroots rugby event has seen more than 70,000 children take part.

This season sees the 10th anniversary edition of the event — the 'Testimonial Season' — with Saints hosting their festival in the shadow of Franklin's Gardens on Saturday.

Wymondham Under-12s were one of almost 20 Under-12 teams in attendance, and even got the chance to strut their stuff in front of Saints player Jamie Elliott, who was casting his eyes over the next generation of stars.

And while they missed out on the chance to attend next May's Aviva Premiership Rugby Final 11-year-old Ethan Ellis insisted he had loved every minute of the experience.

'It was good to come here because we haven't been to many competitions where you get to play at a famous training ground,' said the Wymondham High pupil.

Teams from across the county will compete at various festivals hosted by the 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs this season, with the opportunity to earn a trip to the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final on May 26

Meanwhile Wymondham Wasps beat Shelford 41-5 in their latest Women's Championship Midlands Two fixture.

Despite travelling with just 12 players, Shelford showed enormous strength and tenacity to frustrate the home team throughout.

Wasps got off to a flying start when Aristea Papaoikonomou scored her first try for the club.

Wasps however struggled to find previous form and Shelford were soon able to put points of their own on the board.

Libby Lockwood scored Wasps' second, converted by Alice Rayner, and the hosts continued to score at a steady rate with further tries coming from Steph Hanratty, Holly Crook, Jasmine Ellis, Sophia John and Alice Rayner, with two converted by Rayner.

Despite the scoreline Wasps went in disappointed with their handling errors. The win did however put Wasps third in the league and still very much in the running for the top spot.

Forward of the match: Harriet Orrell. Back of the match: Steph Hanratty. Hardest working Wasp: Aristea Papaoikonomou.
