Great Melton U13 lost to Old Buckenham U13 by four runs at Great Melton in the Alan Bridgewater Cup.

An inspired spell of bowling by Nick Rathjen wasn't quite enough to give Melton victory over Old Buckenham in the first game on Melton's new junior grass pitch.

With the visitors seemingly cruising to victory, having only lost two wickets in overhauling Melton's net total of 237, Rathjen took two for one in his two overs and, with Michael Farmer and Chris Greenslade effecting a run out, Buckenham suddenly found themselves with 24 runs deducted.

It left them just four ahead and Melton needing a wicket in the last over.

Meredith played a straight bat to Joe Bush's six deliveries, however, and the visitors finished on 281for five compared to Melton's 285 for six.

Melton were guilty of some rash strokes against the slow bowlers in their innings and lost too many wickets.

Joe Bush hit a powerful 24 not out, Tom Hunter 13 and Chris Greenslade 12, but a lot of singles went begging and this, plus some rash shots, cost them victory in the end.

M Long smashed 27 and D Boorman 19 for Bucks, who looked to be heading for a comfortable win, but Melton stuck to their task and after Johnny Malcolm had taken two wickets, Rathjen came on to set up a dramatic finale.
