WITH two 10k road races taking place at the same weekend, members of Wymondham AC were spoilt for choice and ended up competing at King's Lynn in the Great East Anglia Run and at Croxton in the Breckland 10k in equal numbers.

Some excellent times were achieved by the 20 WAC members competing that day, but only one individual prize winner was amongst them. Anne Martin walked off with the W70 prize at King's Lynn and proved again that she is not only a star on the track but also a great road runner reaching the finishing line well ahead of many competitors half her age.

In the same event Oliver Milk had a great run finishing 22nd out of a field of almost 1,800. Had he decided to run in the Breckland event instead, his time of 35:53 would have given him third position overall, just 40 seconds behind the winner Robert Chenery (Ipswich Jaffa).

The only other WAC member to beat the 40-minute barrier was James Birch in a time of 39:23, leading the Wymondham men home at Breckland.

Chairman Karl Chapman competing in his first road race after a long lay-off due to injury had a close battle with fellow club member Eddie Greenland throughout the race but eventually got away to beat Greenland by nine seconds finishing in 42:00 and 42:09 respectively. Terry Brannan, Mike Smith (H), Carl Machin, Dale Cooper and Patrick Larke were the other WAC members who finished inside 50 minutes.

First lady home for Wymondham was Tracy Stevens in 46:35 improving her previous best time over that distance by an impressive 90 seconds. Jules Kennelly (52:14) Anne Martin (52:48) and Wendy Larke (1-04:59) were the other female members from Wymondham.

For Rodney Freeburn it was his first event as a M70. Although disappointed with his time and suffering under the warm running conditions, he still qualified for a club bronze standard.

Other runners were Mark Tufts, Ian Crutchley, Mike Smith (W), Graham Coleman, Louis Cooper and Dennis Wells.

Wymondham AC meets every Monday at 6.30pm at the Rugby Club off Tuttles Lane East. Runners of all standards are always welcome.
