Young taekwondo ace Jack Spall, from Attleborough, landed gold and bronze medals at the TAGB South East Championships.

Victory was particularly sweet for the 12-year-old, who attends Attleborough High School, as he had lost almost two months’ training after sustaining a heavy injury to his ribs and shoulder at the open taekwondo world championships.

Following a six-week continuous fitness and recovery programme, Jack was invited to attend the TAGB South East Championships.

In the patterns event of the competition, he blitzed straight through to the final play-offs, where he came running in an excellent third place, adding another bronze medal to his ever-growing collection.

Then it was on to the sparring event. Jack’s first opponent was a bigger, stronger opponent but despite being put to the floor with an accidental kick to the back, Jack came back after time out with full force to win the fight.

The journey continued straight to the final where Jack faced a Liverpool lad who had already beaten Jack twice in previous finals.

Jack was put to the floor but he was allowed by medics to continue and from this point on he dominated the rest of the rounds, winning by a clear seven points to two to take the gold.

Jack’s proud dad Graham said: “This was an excellent occasion for a couple of reasons - this was the first gold medal for Jack as a 3rd kup, only to learn upon returning home that he had passed his recent grading with a plus pass to 2nd kup.

“As Jack is now a 2nd kup he plans to concentrate all of his efforts over the next few years to becoming a 1st kup black belt. We would like to congratulate Jack for an incredible year and wish him well at the Great British Championships at the end of November.”
