Then Ipswich return to the Memorial Field on Sunday (2pm) for South-East League matches.

Hawks finally got their league season off the ground at the weekend even though a hailstorm threatened the second match.

Entertaining Ipswich, the Hawks started with a South-East Youth League match.

Good team riding by Ben Collins set the scene as his partner went through to record a 7-3 win in heat one and the Hawks piled on the pressure to be 49-31 up at the interval.

Even giving young substitute Callum Martin some rides near the end did not prevent a comprehensive 92-67 win by the reigning champions. Hamill went on to complete a maximum and Dan Chambers was also unbeaten by an Ipswich rider.

Hethersett U16 92, Ipswich U16 67. (Harley Hamill 20, Phil Adams 19, Dan Chambers 18, Ben Collins 15, Danny Woods 1,1 Carly Grimes 5, Callum Martin 4).

In the Norfolk & Suffolk League match that followed, the Hawks got off to a dream start by registering four 7-3 wins in the first five heats.

Former British Junior Champion Dan Pike kept Ipswich's score ticking with a faultless maximum but solid teamwork eased the Hawks to victory. Harley Hamill added three more unbeaten rides while Dave Chambers made his debut and won a race.

Tim Grimes came into the final heat for his first match for over 20 years and was leading before falling heavily and taking no further part.
