MULBARTON racer Tristan Cliffe had a very good weekend's action in the Monoposto 2000 Championship with two races at the gloriously sunny Anglesey circuit in North Wales.

For race one Cliffe claimed pole position from his rival Jeremy Timms by 0.8 of a second, although when the race started it was Timms who took the early lead in the race with Cliffe slotting in behind the 2008 Champion.

After a couple of laps, Cliffe decided to make his move and out-braked Timms into Radar corner.

Timms tried to pressurise Cliffe, but it was Timms who ran wide off the track whilst lapping a backmarker which allowed Cliffe to relax slightly and to conserve his tyres in the wilting heat, although it was not long before Timms had closed the gap.

Cliffe increased his pace and they finished in that order, with Cliffe setting the fastest lap of the race, establishing a new lap record.

Race two was another story - mysteriously the car developed a misfire overnight and was not co-operating fully.

Somehow Cliffe managed to wrestle the poorly Dallara around the circuit, often on the very limit of adhesion in an attempt to maintain what speed he could.

And everyone in Cliffe's race championship was surprised to find out that he had claimed his fourth pole position of the year, albeit with a much smaller margin to Timms in second.

Cliffe's Omicron team set to work attempting to locate the misfire and to effect a cure.

Come race time it was again the more experienced Timms who took the lead of the race, although further down the field a start-line accident between Jeremy Goodman's Ralt and Russ Giles' Reynard brought out the safety car whilst marshals cleared Giles stranded car, but this left the field with a short five-minute sprint.

Cliffe tried everything he could to pass, but Timms knew just how wide he needed to make his car, and this time it was Cliffe who had to settle for second place, although once again he set fastest lap which also improved on his own existing lap record.

The next race is a month's time at Snetterton.
