Football: Mulbarton come through difficult test

PUBLISHED: 14:48 05 April 2012

Mulbarton Wdrs 2, Redgrave Rgs 0

Mulbarton Wanderers hosted Redgrave on Saturday in what turned out to be an extremely tough test of their title credentials in Anglian Combination Division Four.

After a very even first half was played out with little goalmouth action, the second had slightly more to get excited about.

Redgrave squandered a good chance mid-way through with a near post header and Kristian Carter blocked another on the line with 15 minutes to go.

Wanderers kept plugging away and were rewarded when Mark Appleton was released on the halfway line – powering past his marker he found a neat finish past the keeper.

A few minutes later and he made it two with a similar move, this time rounding the keeper and finishing with his left foot to secure the three points and push Mulbarton into second place with games in hand.

It wasn’t their best performance of the season by a long way, but it was arguably one of the most important results against very tough opposition.

Mulbarton now have six games remaining, starting with a visit to St Andrews Reserves on Saturday, as they bid to stay in the title hunt.
