Wymondham Wasps 17, UEA Ladies 0
RUGBY: Wymondham Ladies recorded their first-ever 15-a-side victory in their short history.
Welcoming UEA Ladies to Tuttles Lane, Wymondham produced a great performance and provided some great entertaining rugby for the large crowd that turned up to watch.
From the outset the Wasps showed their intent, putting UEA under lots of pressure and forcing several handling errors.
In the forwards the Wasps pack dominated the set-piece leaving the UEA pack at sixes and sevens. It was led by a powerful display from Wymondham’s front three.
Nevertheless, despite constant pressure, UEA’s defence held firm up to the break although Sarah Long came close to a debut try it remained 0-0 at half-time.
Ten minutes into the second half, full-back Sarah Dyche entered the line and proved devastating as she wrong footed the defence to score between the sticks, providing the full-back an easy conversion of her own try.
Wasps’ domination now began to reap rewards and as their confidence increased so did their skills levels as each one showed remarkable handling skills.
Keeping the ball alive with skilful off-loads and aggressive forward play finally paid off. Megan Eldridge finally made one of her several breaks pay off as she out-paced the scrambling UEA defence to touch down in the left corner.
Despite stretching the lead Wymondham could not afford to relax as UEA mounted some attacks of their own. From a penalty five metres out the Wasps defence needed to be resolute and full-back Dyche managed to clear the Wymondham line.
Late into the half the Wasps kept their composure whilst still playing some exciting rugby.
Their skilful handling provided Eldridge with her second try which she scored in the corner, outflanking the UEA defence once again to cap off a memorable day for Wymondham Wasps.
