Wymondham's outside chances of winning the Eastern Counties One title all but disappeared when they were beaten at fourth-from-bottom Ipswich YM.
A fifth defeat of the season left them 10 points behind champions-elect Thetford, with just three matches left to play.
The Red and Blacks, who travelled down to Suffolk with a depleted side, started well with a couple of converted tries but it wasn't long before Ipswich moved ahead. Wymondham, who lost Josh Wilson to a nasty dislocation of his thumb which required hospital treatment, were always in the game, but a late converted try from the hosts stopped a potential comeback in its tracks.
Josh Cousens, Chris Collins-Reed and Auden Airdrie scored the Wymondham tries, with Cousens adding two conversions and a penalty.
Thetford beat third-placed Crusaders, who had been on a fine run, 31-15 at Two Mile Bottom to all but seal the title.
