Wymondham water ski star Danielle Shorten has already delivered on her promise to make 2009 a successful year with an outstanding performance at the Junior World Championships in Peru.

The 17-year-old has been out of the country since mid-December, first spending time at a British team training camp in Florida, before taking to the Bujama Lacus Lakes, south of the capital Lima, to compete.

She made sure she continued her good form from last year into 2009 with some impressive results that saw her finish ninth overall in the world in her age group. The Easton College pupil's best performance came in her favoured event - the jump - where she finished sixth. 'I was very happy with my results and standings because I wasn't even sure whether I was going to get into the jump finals, and then I got in and came sixth, which felt great.'

She had been hoping to beat the world under-17 jump record of 36.9m ain what was her final attempt at the record. But in the end, the slower wind speed effectively ended her chances and she missed out by just 30cm.

'I was a little disappointed with not getting the world under-17 jump record, but then again I was happy because it was a personal best and was the closest anyone has got to it in 14 years, which was when it was set,' said Shorten. 'It was all definitely worth it. I was very homesick at Christmas but I think it was because it was just a different way of living. 'I am really looking forward to competing this year as an under-21 and I cannot wait to see if I get picked for the Europeans and Worlds.'
