Crucial win for Old Bucks
Old Buckenham's hopes of staying in the Premier League were kept alive with a six-wicket win at home and in the heat against Lowestoft. Deciding to ask Lowestoft to bat first on a good batting wicket, Buckenham were looking for early inroads and were obliged when there was a mix-up between the two openers, resulting in Peter Sims being run out in the fifth over.
After a tight start, Sri Lankan Chanaka Winthanage was introduced and his seamers removed the dangerous South African Mostert for 20 and Kevin Storey lbw for just four.
As runs dried up in the middle of the innings and the odd wicket falling, Lowestoft struggled to 87 for four after 30 overs. Despite a brief cameo of 25 from Tom Brice and a captain's 50 from Nathan Garrod, Lowestoft's innings ended when Matt Reid chipped Winthanage to cover giving him figures of three for 19. Rob Austin sneaked some middle innings wickets to finish with three for 26 and there was a wicket a piece for Jimmy Heaney, Ben Mann and Craig Savage.
In reply, Bucks were off to a flyer, with Terry Perry and Jon Fudge exchanging early boundaries. They put on 59 in 13overs before Perry was caught at slip for 20 off the spin of Bishop.
Three balls later and Buckenham's pro was out in the same fashion and with a win a necessity, it was a nervous period.

A 60-wicket partnership between Ben Player and Jon Fudge ended when Fudge was caught at mid-wicket for a well-made 68. Darren Savage was lbw second ball to renew a few nerves with still 37 required, but Player (25) and skipper Rob Austin (24) saw the team home with a flurry of boundaries to complete a comfortable win with over 10 overs remaining.
A crucial win, but Bucks are still bottom after results went against them.
Five more games remain, starting with Acle away this Saturday.
