CONNAUGHT Bowls Club, Attleborough, had an intense week of five competitive short mat fixtures.

The highlight was Connaught A's defeat of Norwich-based First Bus in the first leg of the Norwich Cup semi-final.

Connaught A beat First Bus at home by 15-9 over 12 triples matches of six ends apiece. Results (skips' names); R Wells 15-1, 5-2, 4-3; S Bragg 6-6, 7-1, 6-4; T Musk 3-11, 2-6, 6-2; L Fallows 7-2, 6-7, 2-7.

Ray Wells, Diana Adcock and Sylvia Parsons maintained their 100 per cent record in the competition with a storming display. Sheila Bragg, Ollie Allen and Russell Hales also had a good evening. The other triples each won a match in a team display which gives Connaught A a reasonable chance of doing enough in the away leg to reach the final. However, First Bus will be tough opposition on home mats. All to play for.

In the Breckland League Connaught A won 63-57 and 6-4 at Watton. S Parsons 17-11, L Fallows 19-12, S Bragg 14-18, R Oatway 13-16.

Every contest was a tough one but Connaught A were disappointed overall after winning the first two matches. The losing triples faded from winning positions and a 10-0 opportunity was lost.

Also in the Breckland League Connaught B lost 64-67 and 2-8 at home to Hingham. D Liles 27-7, J Hazell 11-18, J Barnes 11-20, A Rush 15-22. Derek Liles, Len Thurston and Ken Lurcock had a convincing win, but the losing triples dropped shots in the home straight.

Connaught B had had a good chance of a 6-4 or 4-6 result.

In the Tens League Connaught lost 29-61 and 0-4 at Hevingham. Despite the result overall Connaught generally played well against a talented side. Connaught recovered well at home to Watton by winning 71-50 and 4-0 in a solid performance.
