WYMONDHAM Town entertained Corton in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, losing 2-1.

Town were again without Etheridge, McCloy and Stannard but they welcomed back Mitchell who slotted in at right-back.

The game was played in atrocious conditions which made attractive football virtually impossible. Town started the better and should have taken the lead after Pipe followed up a shot the keeper could only parry.

As Pipe was about to shoot into the empty goal, a last-ditch tackle prevented him from converting.

Corton came back into the game and had a couple of chances which they failed to convert.

The Rooks were the ones who opened the scoring. Pattison put in a teasing low cross. Ramsbottom was able to get across his marker and convert at the keeper's front post.

From Town's point of view a deserved lead as keeper Hodges was not forced into a save during the first half. The second half started with Corton on top, during this spell they duly equalised.

A cross came in from the Corton left; the striker was left unmarked and converted with ease.

After this setback Town regained their composure and should have regained the lead but Pattison headed weakly wide from close range.

Town continued to apply pressure but chances were at a premium.

Corton looked dangerous with their attack-minded formation but Town were working hard.

This made it difficult for Priest and Scadden in midfield but both worked hard for the cause.

With just 15 minutes to go, Corton “scored” their winner. To add insult into injury it came from a Town defender. Corton held on for their victory.

MoM: Put it down to a team performance.
