Wymondham residents had the chance to tell planning officers where they think housing should be built in the future during a consultation event.

Representatives from South Norfolk Council attended the Central Hall this afternoon to hear people's opinions on which areas would be most suitable for development from a list of possible sites put forward by landowners.

According to the Greater Norwich Development Partnership's Joint Core Strategy (JCS), adopted by the council this year, South Norfolk will grow by 10,500 new homes over the next 15 years - with 2,200 expected to built in Wymondham.

The town may also have to accommodate a slice of 1,800 'floating' homes not yet allocated across the district.

But although the council is not due to finalise its plans for the district's growth - known as the Local Development Framework (LDF) - until the end of next year, companies have already been submitting planning applications for major housing developments on the outskirts of the town.

Approval was recently given for more than 650 new homes off Norwich Common, north of Wymondham, while two developers are preparing to place applications equating to about 1,300 new homes to the south of the town.

Simon Marjoram, senior planning officer, admitted it was 'difficult' to ask for views on the suitability of all the nominated sites around Wymondham when some were already subject of planning applications, but urged residents to still take part in the council's discussions.

He said: 'Major planning applications can take a long time to go through the planning process. I realise this process (formulation of the LDF) takes a long time too, but we want people to engage in this process because although a couple of sites have outline permission we do not know if the next one's will do so.'

Mr Marjoram added that the homes already with planning permission could be taken off the 2,200 total, but that decision was still 'further down the line'.

Planning officers are visiting venues across the district asking residents which sites in their area's would best suit development. The next event will take place tomorrow at The Range, in Costessey, between 9am and 4pm. The consultation ends on November 18.
