Almost 200 young people from across Europe will be heading to Norfolk next year to debate major political topics.

Wymondham College will follow in the footsteps of schools in Madrid, Stockholm and Istanbul when it plays host to the biannual session of the Model European Parliament (MEP) next April.

Some 180 students from 30 countries in Europe will come together to represent their home nations in debates.

The delegates, aged 16 to 19, will be staying at the college, but students from schools and academies across Norfolk will be invited to take part in the high-profile event.

The University of East Anglia will host the final sessions, while Norfolk County Council, City College and Park Farm Hotel are all offering their support.

Ten students from the college went to Madrid last month for a session of the parliament. Edward Wilson, 16, was one of them and said: 'It was fantastic and one of the best weeks of my life. One of the key points was being able to meet people from all across Europe.'

Apart from giving students a taste of politics, the event will also put Norfolk on the map and Wymondham College is hoping to get support from companies and businesses.

Jeremy Moyle, language college director at Wymondham College, said: 'The week will provide high quality opportunities for students to develop communication and social skills as they work in committees to examine and debate complex social, economic and political issues.

'We are grateful to all partners who have pledged support for the session and would be very keen to hear from other local businesses who could help either financially or through the donation of conference or souvenir items for delegates.'
