Wymondham children raise money for Kenyan schools

PUBLISHED: 10:07 16 June 2011

Schoolchildren in Wymondham have raised more than £3,000 thanks to a sponsored walk with a twist.

Pupils at Robert Kett Junior School walked a mile and a half carrying heavy bottles full of water to illustrate the difficulties people face around the world in accessing clean water.

Children also learned about the long journeys that women and children face in Kenya to collect water for their families, sometimes walking up to 10 kilometres (about 6.2 miles) carrying the weight of 20 kilograms (3.1 stones) on their heads.

Sponsorship collected from the walk will be spent on stationary and sports resources for three different primary schools in Kenya.

The event was organised by Year 5 teacher Emma Griggs, who will be volunteering for 10 days at the schools this month and taking the newly bought equipment along with her.
