There is nothing better than curling up on a wet day with a good book, according to author Pamela Brooks.

And pupils at a rain-soaked Wicklewood Primary School were able to choose from a whole host of new books after their new library was opened by the writer.

Mrs Brooks is the Norfolk writer in residence for the National Year of Reading 2008 and has published work on Norfolk history as well as writing romance fiction for Mills & Boon under the name Kate Hardy.

She said she believed it was essential children had access to a good library and reading to fire their imaginations and make them writers for the future.

“A book can take you far away from a rainy day,” she said. “Good reading also passes on to good writing.”

While she cut the ribbon on the new library on Monday with KS1 children she spent some time with KS2 pupils explaining how to write a book, getting it published and all the publicity work that has to go with it to get people to buy it.

Headteacher Judith Beardsworth said the staff and pupils were all very excited about the new library and had received sponsorship for 102 new books from parents and friends, which equated to a value of almost £800.

She said: "We have had some very generous donations, another parent has kindly put up new shelves and the Friends of Wicklewood School are donating some fundraising money towards new blinds.

“The old library was really unsuitable because it was all in the adminstration area so not only do we have a new library but it has improved other parts of the school too and given us more space all round.”
