Greater Anglia services from the capital to Norwich at 3.30pm, 4pm, 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm have been cancelled.

The 3.30pm and 4.30pm route from Norwich to London is also not running due to the damaged wires in Colchester.

A statement on the Greater Anglia website said: "Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Colchester and Manningtree all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or revised. Disruption is expected until 8pm on February 13.

"Network Rail engineers are on site at the location currently making repairs."

There will be an hourly service from Norwich to Ipswich then buses between Ipswich and Colchester.

Tickets on these services will be accepted on East Midlands Railways services between Norwich and Ely.

Customers can also travel via Norwich to London from Norwich via Cambridge but that journey will take three-four hours.

Greater Anglia passenger Lauren Danielle tweeted: "Wow @greateranglia is a shambles. Trains direct from London to Norwich cancelled all day, so we got a train to Cambridge and now it's been terminated at bishop stortford because of problems on the line. We're now just stood here because no one seems to know what's going on."
