Hethersett youngster Julianna Ball admits that she has faced some very difficult challenges during her time working in Uganda.

Julianna, who has been sponsored by a number of local people to work with children in the African country, has been in Uganda for four months.

“The four months I have had here have been really good but also at times very hard and I have had to face some real challenges but found ways to overcome these,” Julianna states in a newsletter to her supporters.

Julianna has been living and working in a home for disabled children in the village of Budaka and she is slowly learning to speak the local dialect of lugwere.

“The home is down a dirt track where four schools are situated. Also down the track are traditional mud hut villages,” Julianna states.

Juliana's main task at the Budaka Cheshire Homes is to look after the well being of the children, helping them with their homework and playing sports games and teaching them crafts. She also teaches at the local boys' primary school.

“Living in a home for disabled children has its good and bad points. I don't have to travel to work but on the other hand am always on call and when a child ran away at 3 a.m I had to go out and look for her,” Julianna said.

“Uganda is a very friendly place and people are always willing to talk to you,” Julianna said adding that she was looking forward to the remainder of her time in Africa, having already taken some opportunities to travel round the country.
