Fairy tales and nursery rhymes were brought to life by a group of creative youngsters in a bid to raise as much money as possible for those less fortunate than themselves.

More than 30 youngsters at Mulbarton Children’s Centre took part in this year’s Barnardo’s Big Toddle, a short sponsored walk to raise money for the charity’s under fives’ project.

And with the theme revolving around their favourite nursery rhymes and fairy tales, each child –and some parents – became the hero of the story for the day.

Secretary Sara Wayte said the children’s centre had set up an obstacle course at Wednesday’s event for the children to toddle around.

“Everybody had lots of fun and there was lots of dressing up,” she said.

“We’d been doing various fundraising in the centre and we thought it would be something good to do. It’s something for them to get stuck into and gets them outside and in the sunshine – and it helps to raise some money too.”

The centre, a charity run by staff and parent-volunteers for children of all abilities between two and four, set up an obstacle course for the youngsters to work their way around. They hope to have raised more than £900 from the event.

Ms Wayte said they also intended to repeat the event next year.

The Barnardo’s Big Toddle is the UK’s biggest charity event for children up to five with more than 7,000 childcare providers and parents across the country taking part each year.

Funds raised go to disadvantaged children, which can include those with disabilities, living in poverty or overcoming a traumatic experience such as domestic violence or losing a parent.
