WYMONDHAM High School's Green Team students have met local retailers to discuss the town becoming plastic bag free.

The youngsters - committed to spreading the environment message - also picked up a Civic Award from South Norfolk Council chairman Joe Mooney for their work in bringing the problem of plastic bags to the community's attention. The Green Team has been working towards eradicating the plastic bag from the town's shopping culture.

Becky Cooke from East Anglia's Children's Hospice (Each store said the students had impressed her. Each has stopped using plastic bags and will be sourcing alternatives.

Many shops in Wymondham are already selling cotton, jute and recycled “bags for life” and some using paper and corn starch products.

Ann Roberts, community environment worker, said: “The students did a marvellous job of planning and chairing the meeting which enabled a frank discussion with the traders.

“Together we have planned a way ahead and will work together towards this Christmas being free of plastic bags in Wymondham.

“We are all very proud of them leading the community.”
