A south Norfolk junior school is beginning to turn the corner, just six months after it was placed in special measures.

Attleborough Junior School is making satisfactory progress and standards and teaching have improved, according to inspectors.

Oftsed visited the school earlier this month for its first monitoring inspection since the school was placed in special measures in January.

Inspectors identified no further areas for improvement but said further development of teaching and learning should have primacy.

The three inspectors who visited the school found there had been improvements to lesson planning and that in good lessons teachers were skilfully providing pupils with a variety of well managed and motivating activities.

They added that pupils' behaviour was good and pupils were polite and pleasant. Inspectors also praised the school council and the school's use of peer mentors to resolve any playtime disagreements.

Chris Read, the school's headteacher, took up post in November and, with the support of staff and governors, had brought in many initiatives prior to the January inspection. However, Oftsed recognised that these had not had time to fully embed when they carried out their inspection.

In their latest report, inspectors said staff had confidence in Mr Read and that communication at the school was good.

Mr Read said: “It is testament to the hard work of staff, governors and pupils that we are making significant strides in improving our school.

“We know that there is still much to be done but we are confident that we are well on the way to make the necessary improvements at our school.

“We are now determined to drive up standards in the school and ensure that all pupils are receiving the stimulating and rewarding education they deserve.”

Inspectors recognised the strong role of the school's governing body and the extensive support offered to the school from Norfolk County Council.
