Public drink ban in part of Wymondham
An order giving police the power to stop people from drinking alcohol in public has been introduced to part of Wymondham to help tackle drink-related anti-social behaviour.
An order giving police the power to stop people from drinking alcohol in public has been introduced to part of Wymondham to help tackle drink-related anti-social behaviour.
Public drinking can be banned anywhere within a zone bordered line following Wymondham CP Recreation Ground, Station Road, Fairland Street, Friarscroft Lane, the River Tiffey boundary, Becketswell Road, Vicar Street, Town Green, Pople Street, Rothbury Road, Orchard Way, Norwich Road, Browick Road and Ayton Road.
A new Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) means police and police community support officers have powers to control the consumption of alcohol within the designated area. If they believe someone is consuming alcohol or intends to consume alcohol they can get them to stop drinking and they can confiscate alcohol from people even if the can or bottle is unopened.
If drinkers fail to comply police can issue a penalty notice for disorder of £50, arrest and prosecute offenders who then face a fine of up to £500 and impose bail restrictions banning them from drinking in public or entering licensed premises.
Wymondham acting inspector Chris Claydon said: “The DPPO for Wymondham is the result of a long period of close working between Wymondham Police SNT, Wymondham Town Council and South Norfolk Council, and also after a great deal of community engagement.
“This now gives us the power to seize alcohol from anyone who we believe may ultimately cause problems for the community and it is a valuable tool available to us to reduce crime and disorder. We have no desire to criminalise responsible members of the public and will only use this power when necessary.”

South Norfolk councillor David Bills, cabinet member for the environment, health, recycling and safety, said: "It is important to note that this DPPO does not hinder sensible consumption of alcohol in the areas but does give police officers and PCSO's the right to instruct people to stop drinking no matter what their age. Responsible drinkers will not be affected.”
