A pair of painters and decorators are preparing to climb from peak to peak across the Lake District in the name of charity.

Richard Ellis, 27, and James Morris, 29, will raise money for Cancer Research UK and Help for Heroes, which offers support for wounded British soldiers.

The pair will set off on May 21 and climb to the peak of Scafell Pike, the highest mountain in England, spend the night at the top, and then trek across two more peaks and finally make their way to the peak of Great Gable, where they will spend their final night.

The trip is expected to take four days, to include 15 miles of strenuous trekking up and down mountains, and the pair hope to raise £1,000 for each charity.

Mr Ellis, from Penhill Road in Attleborough, said: “We thought if we were going to do it we may as well do it for a charity, and if we were going to do it we should do it properly. James' best friend's mum has cancer and we decided on Help for Heroes because there are so many troops overseas at the moment. All my family have been or are in the military and my uncle is still serving.”

The pair have been training by running, swimming and walking and have so far received support from nearby businesses, with equipment donated by Swanton Morley barracks.

Mr Ellis added: “I think because we're painters and decorators it's something people wouldn't expect us to do, so it's a challenge for us and we've had lots of support. It doesn't sound like very far but when you're climbing and going from peak to peak ithard work.”
