A teacher from Norfolk who is relocating to Prague will move house by bicycle - and he expects it to take seven weeks.

Edward Mooney, from Wymondham, set off on his 1,500-mile journey on Tuesday, and will start work at the International School of English Language in the Czech Republic when he arrives.

“I got a bit fed up of my current job and decided I'd move,” said Mr Mooney, who is also collecting sponsorship for his ride to fund an educational website project for children in Africa.

“A friend of mine is a refugee from Rwanda and he was casting around for ideas as to what he could do to help out. This is a life change that I'm making, but I'm also hoping to link it in.”

The website will help children at Saint Joseph Primary School in Rwanda's capital, Kigali, learn English and IT skills, and Mr Mooney hopes to travel there next summer to help out in person.

“It will enable children and teachers to learn to use computers. The first step is to get the children using it. They like to learn when they don't know they're learning,” he said.

As if the journey was not long enough already, Mr Mooney will be taking a winding route to his new home through Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Poland, before finally entering the Czech Republic.

“I'm taking five sets of clothes, which I'll either have to wear inside out or find somewhere to clean them,” he said.

“I've been cycling to work every day. It's made me realise it's possible, once you get on your bike and put the miles in.”

Mr Mooney has raised £400 for the charity so far, and further donations can be given by visiting www.esaintjoseph.org.

Should this journey go to plan, Mr Mooney said that he would consider another epic cycling journey, this time setting off from Prague and travelling to Istanbul.
