A town council has bought a new speed sign as part of an initiative to encourage motorists to drive at or below the speed limit.

Wymondham Town Council has purchased a SAM2 speed monitor, which will give a visual alert to drivers showing the speed they are travelling.

Where appropriate, it will ask them to slow down on certain roads in Wymondham.

The equipment has been bought with funding help from Norfolk County Council under its parish parnership scheme.

The SAM2 unit can be moved to a range of fixed locations where brackets will be installed, enabling the flashing sign to spend a week or two in different places where excess speed is known to be a problem.

The six locations initially chosen include Tuttles Lane, Hewitts Lane and Spooner Row.

The town’s mayor Colin Foulger said: “This sign will be used to educate motorists and to encourage them to drive at or below the speed limit.

“Road safety is an important priority and this is an example of the town council and Norfolk County Council working together to address known problems.

“Data captured by the equipment will also be available to road safety agencies including the police.”
