Wymondham's new landmark library has proved a hit with residents, with take-up of library membership, visitor numbers and loans all rocketing.

More than 500 people have signed up to become library members since the new building in Back Lane opened its doors on November 10. This compares to 38 people becoming members in the same period last year, equating to a massive 1271pc increase.

Jennifer Holland, head of libraries at Norfolk County Council, said: “There was a lot of excitement around the opening of the library and we expected to attract more members because of it and I'm really pleased with the numbers who have decided to join in the last month.”

The number of visits to the library and the number of items being checked out has also risen, with 13,181 visitors borrowing 20,033 items between 10 November and 6 December 2008. These demonstrate a 73pc increase and a 136pc increase respectively compared to the same period last year, when 7,637 visits were made and 8,507 items issued.
