A green village 2008 campaign is being conducted at Hethersett in a bid to help safeguard the environment.

The initiative is being spearheaded by members of the village's environmental action team who will be delivering a cloth shopping bag to local households to encourage people to reduce the amount of plastic bags they use.

The group is also holding six-weekly litter picks, and other improvements, as well as working with schools in the village on various projects. These include converting part of the infants school grounds for a cycle track and other activities in which old materials will be re-used. The junior school also has a cloth bag scheme, and pupils at the high school have an eco-group whose role includes looking after a wildlife site.

An information day is planned on at Hethersett Village Hall on Saturday, May 31, from noon until 4pm. It will feature displays and advice on green issues, with the Energy Saving Trust among those taking part. The environmental team sought an award from B and Q for 400 economy light bulbs which will be given free to visitors. Trees, rainwater butts and compost bins will also be on offer.
