Latest figures show the benchmark rate of new cases per 100,000 people in North Norfolk is the second-lowest in the country.

Just one new case was recorded during the seven days to September 10, a fall from five the previous week.

Tendring, in Essex, also reported a single new case, while its rate of new cases per 100,000 people was marginally lower at 0.7 compared to one per 100,000 in North Norfolk.

In East Cambridgeshire, there were 2.2 new cases per 100,000 people, while the rate was 5.3 in West Norfolk, 6.1 in Broadland, 6.9 in Fenland, 8.4 in East Suffolk, 8.5 in South Norfolk, 9.2 in Norwich, 10 in Breckland and 13.1 in Great Yarmouth.

At the other end of the scale, the highest rates of new cases were in Bolton, which saw 192 new cases per 100,000 people.

Norfolk is now below the alert level for the virus, while the peak of the outbreak centred on Banham Poultry has passed.

A mobile testing unit near the factory in Attleborough recorded three positive tests last week, compared to 92 in the previous seven days.

It comes as new restrictions limiting gatherings to a maximum of six people come into force.

People face fines of up to £3,200 if they do not abide by the law, which applies both indoors and out.

More than 3,000 Covid-19 cases were recorded in the UK for the third day in a row on Sunday - the first time since May that cases were above 3,000 on three consecutive days.

Aside from limited exemptions including work and education, police will be able to disperse gatherings of more than six people and issue fines ranging from £100 to £3,200.

A poll by the British Medical Association (BMA) found 86pc of doctors and medical students feared that a second peak was likely or very likely in the next six months.

Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA council chairman, said: “With daily cases still alarmingly high, and winter just around the corner, we are at a critical crossroads in the fight against this deadly virus.

“All efforts must be made to avoid a repeat of the horror and tragedy we all experienced earlier this year.”

Here are the figures for each local authority. From left to right, it reads: Name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 10; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 10; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 3; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 3.
