Hethersett Junior School will be bagging an idea thanks to a special green grant.

Every pupil at the school will receive an eco-friendly canvas and cotton bag as part of the school's go green policy.

The £5,000 grant comes from the National College of School Leadership to help promote eco-sustainability in the school and local community.

We will be producing eco-friendly bags for the children that they can take out with them when they go shopping," said Head Teacher Andy Whittle. The bags feature the words "plastic pollutes, cotton conserves" and were designed by pupil Sassy Holmes. The school will also be working with the Hethersett Environmental Action Team and other schools in the immediate area to find other ways of becoming environmentally friendly.

The project is being co-ordinated by teacher Liz Davies and the school is increasing its re-cycling as well as using matter such as banana skins from packed lunches to produce compost for organic produce including lettuce, courgettes and runner-beans. These will then be sold to the children.

The school is also continuing to educate pupils about healthy eating and the need to save energy. It recently had an energy saving day where the children wore green clothes and appliances were turned off when not in use.

"We are also part of an energy monitoring scheme and have received advice on maintaining and controlling radiators and boilers," Andy Whittle added.
