A new opportunity in a south Norfolk town will give newcomers and visitors to the area a chance to sample its history and heritage.

Although Georgette Vale, a local history and heritage enthusiast, has been running guided tours of Wymondham for five years, they will now operate on a fixed schedule throughout summer.

A special newcomers event on Sunday will not only give people a taste of the walks, but will help those who have just moved to the community get involved.

Mrs Vale, 58, said that when she and her husband Tony came to Wymondham 17 years ago, it was difficult to know where to start.

She added: “It would be nice to have something to welcome them into the town and give them an idea of what goes on.

“I think we have a really lovely town. Wymondham is extremely interesting. There is always something happening – you can’t really be bored!”

The tours will visit historic parts of the town including the abbey, the market cross, the Wymondham Heritage Museum and up to town green, amongst many others.

Mrs Vale, who works in the sensory impairment field, said: “We hope that it will be an icebreaker for those who want to find out more about our historic market town and that it will encourage local residents to explore Wymondham’s iconic visitor attractions.

“We also hope that we will have people come from outside the area who want to know a bit about the place.”

The free event on Sunday, April 6 will take place at the Roman Catholic Church Hall in Norwich Road between 2 and 4pm.

A series of events will run throughout the summer on Wednesdays and Fridays. The first event is on April 30.
