Filling station owners in Norfolk have raised their fears over the rising price of petrol.

Petrol prices have reached their highest prices since 2014, with fears Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal could drive costs up even further.

Government figures reveal the average cost of a litre of petrol in the UK is £1.23, 8p more than this time last year.

Prices have risen since the president of the United States pulled the country out of the Iran nuclear deal, but Charles Reynolds, who operates a service station alongside his business, Reynolds Coaches of Caister, said prices have been increasing for a long time.

He said: 'There have been relentless rises in cost each time I phone up to order fuel. We're not talking about decimals, it's three of four pence a litre each time, and if you're old enough to remember gallons then it's an awful lot of money.

'They've been higher than this before, but everyone is talking about it because really it is noticeable.

'We haven't noticed any lack of sales, but plenty of moans about the prices obviously.'

Mr Reynolds added that people in rural areas across the region are particularly helpless when prices are hiked.

He said: 'We are so reliant on our cars, especially in rural areas. In cities they have subsidised bus services but a lot of us need our cars to get around.

'There's nothing we can do and there's nothing customers can do - they either don't use their vehicles or pay.'

Gavin Taber, who has owned Roydon Service Station in Diss for 10 years, said he had noticed how high prices had affected customer behaviour.

He said: 'When the prices go up we notice people who would often go away for the weekend don't do that much any more.

'It used to be that people would come on a Friday with the family and fill up to go to Yarmouth for the weekend and on Monday you would get people who come in for their week's petrol, but this isn't happening as much any more.

'We try to beat Morrisons or at least price-match them and keep everything as competitive as possible to help the customers who help us.'
