Frustration for drivers and homeowners in Wymondham after road closure
Drivers and homeowners in Wymondham have been left frustrated after a central road was closed while flooding problems are fixed.
Work on Station Road, under the railway bridge, began on July 13, with the road closed entirely for seven weeks from July 22.
The road is notorious for flooding during rainy weather, with drivers often left stranded, and the work has been welcomed by the town.
To ease the struggle, Norfolk County Council set up a diversion via Silfield Road, through Ashwellthorpe to the B1113, the B1135 towards Wymondham, returning to Station Road via Browick Road and Ayton Road.
But some drivers feel the alternative route is too long - opting to travel down The Lizard, a narrow residential street and no-through road which comes out at a private dirt track travelling through land of the same name, cutting through to Right Up Lane.
While the route is quicker, residents of The Lizard as frustrated at the volume of traffic coming down the street.
Gill King, chairman of the Lizard Residents Association, said: “Firstly I would say the speed is an issue - most do come down at the right speeds, we have a 30mph zone, but it is a narrow, oldy-worldy road, with no pavements and some houses that open right onto the road.
“If you are elderly or have children and pets, seeing drivers speed down there is a worry.”
Mrs King also raised concern over the impact on the dirt track, which is the only route that emergency services can access The Lizard on, due to a low bridge at the other end.
“The track is already in a bad way,” she said. “There are loads of pot holes and we have had ambulances not able to get to us when it is rainy and at night. More and more cars going there is only going to damage the track more.”
She urged drivers to use another route if possible and to drive slowly if they had no other option.
But motorists insist they are entitled to use The Lizard.
One driver, who contacted the EDP by email, said: “It’s a public road and as long as people aren’t tearing down there I don’t see what the problem is. It is only for a few more weeks and the diversion, at the wrong times, can add an extra half an hour to my journey.”
