Former pupils at Eccles and Wilby Primary School had a trip down memory lane on Saturday at an exhibition of old school photos.

The Eccles Village Hall committee organised the collection of more than 100 pictures to showcase memories of the school, which closed in the summer after 150 years due to declining pupil numbers and changes in school funding, which made it difficult to manage the school's budget.

The oldest photo on show dated from 1952, while others showed the school during its 1960s heyday when 60 children attended lessons.

When the school closed, there were 27 on the register.

Christine Hewson, a former pupil and one of the organisers, said her favourite memories of her time there were of singing together with the other children and of doing needlework.

One of the photos also showed a famous former pupil- footballer Mervyn Cawston, who played for Norwich City and Southend United.

Mrs Hewson said the committee was hoping to start a heritage group to preserve the history of the village and appealed for people to come forward and join the group, adding the photos would be archived to provide the village with a long-lasting record of the school.

She added: 'The village hall is hoping to start a heritage group and we have a lot of hidden treasures. There is a lot of history in the village, so we want to archive it for the future.'
