Members of Breckland Council have been tasked with coming up with hard evidence over key post offices in the district which they think need to be saved.
The move was discussed at a meeting of the overview and scrutiny committee yesterday and is to be carried out as a consultation on the closure of branches in Nor-folk and west Suffolk looms.
Philip Cowen, chairman of the meeting, said: “We need to engage constructively with the Post Office and make sure those that close have the least impact. Post offices will close unless we can really demonstrate they need to stay open.”
He said the council needed to research which branches could be supported.
It was agreed to invite Post Office officials to the next meeting of the overview and scrutiny group on April 17.
A public consultation on proposed closures in Norfolk and west Suffolk is due to start on March 26 for six weeks.
