A mother of two is appealing for people to join a debate into the future of an area of green space in Wymondham following plans to build a supermarket on the site.

Alison Taylor has been campaigning for the last year to build a new play area in the town centre, preferably at Kings Head Meadow, off Back Lane.

But last month it was announced that Asda was working with Wymondham Town Council to draw up plans for a store on the area, which is home to Wymondam Town Football Club. The club would move to bespoke new facilities at another site yet to be revealed.

While the proposals are still in the early stages, news of the plans has been met with opposition from some residents.

Mrs Taylor said she was not against the principle of a new supermarket in Wymondham, but believed there were better uses for the meadow and wants to open a debate on the issue.

This month she sent a survey to the parents of children at the town's infant and junior schools asking for their opinions. It follows a similar survey last year which she said showed there was demand for new facilities aimed at four to 11-year-olds.

She said: 'It was getting to the point where I had nowhere to take my children to play. At Kings Head Meadow there is a park, but even my two-year-old is getting bored.

'There is nowhere for my five-year-old daughter in town and the consensus among parents is that you have to get in the car and drive to Bracon Ash or Eaton Park.'

She worried that parents would still have to use their cars to access a play area further out of the town centre.

Neil Ward, Wymondham Town Mayor, said: 'This is an issue that we are always looking at and we would like to improve things. It is ongoing, but these things do take time and they take a lot of money.'

Mr Ward said money which would come from the development of Kings Head Meadow could be used to improve its existing play area, which would not be displaced by a new store.

But he added that the council was keen to see equipment spread across the town in light of new housing due to be built on its outskirts.
